Context of Genesis 14:21
19He blessed Abram. He said, ‘I pray that the Most High God who made heaven and earth will bless Abram. 20Praise the Most High God! He has given you power over your enemies.’ After that, Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth part of everything. Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, ‘Give back to me all my people. Take everything else for yourself.’ 22But Abram said to the king of Sodom, ‘I have made a strong promise to the Lord, the Most High God who made heaven and earth. 23I promised that I would not take anything that belonged to you. I will not take the smallest thing, not even a piece of string, or part of a shoe. Then you will never be able to say, “I made Abram become rich.”

Gratitude teaches us to recompense to the utmost of our power, those that have undergone fatigues, run hazards, and been at expense for our service and benefit. Abram generously refused this offer. He accompanies his refusal with a good reason, Lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: which would reflect upon the promise promise and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-24Abram understood that accepting the king of Sodom's offer (see study note on 14:1–2) might make him an ally or subject, as Lot had been. This could put God’s promises at risk. Faith looks beyond the world’s riches to the greater blessings that God will give.Read the comment
