Context of Deuteronomy 25:18
16The Lord your God hates anyone who cheats other people and is not honest. 17Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you came out of Egypt. They attacked you when you were tired and weak. They killed all the people who were walking slowly at the back of your group. They were not afraid of God. 19But the Lord your God will chase away all your enemies. He will give you a safe place to rest in the land that he is giving to you as your new home. When he does that, do not forget to destroy all the Amalekites. Make sure that nobody in the whole world will remember them any more.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 25:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Smote the hindmost of thee - See the note on Exodus 17:8. It is supposed that this command had its final accomplishment in the death of Haman and his ten sons, Esther iii., vii., ix., as from this time the memory and name of Amalek was blotted out from under heaven, for through every period of their history it might be truly said, They feared not God.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 Honesty in trade, as a duty to our neighbor, is emphatically enforced once more (compare Leviticus 19:35-36). It is noteworthy that John the Baptist puts the like duties in the forefront of his preaching (compare Luke 3:12 ff); and that “the prophets” (compare Ezekiel 45:10-12; Amos 8:5; Micah 6:10-11) and “the Psalms” Proverbs 16:11; Proverbs 20:10, Proverbs 20:23, not less than “the Law,” especially insist on them. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-19Verses 17-19 Let every persecutor and injurer of God's people take warning from the case of the Amalekites. The longer it is before judgement comes, the more dreadful will it be at last. Amalek may remind us of the foes of our souls. May we be enabled to slay all our lusts, all the corruptions both within and without, all the powers of darkness and of the world, which oppose our way to the blessed Saviour.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 17-1917-19. Remember what Amalek did--This cold-blooded and dastardly atrocity is not narrated in the previous history (Ex 17:14). It was an unprovoked outrage on the laws of nature and humanity, as well as a daring defiance of that God who had so signally shown His favor towards Israel (see on 1 Samuel 15; 27. 8; 30).Read the comment
