Context of Deuteronomy 14:24
22You must keep safe a tenth part of all the crops that grow in your fields. You must be careful to do this every year. 23Then take your tithe to the place that the Lord your God will choose as his special home. It will be a tenth part of your grain, your new wine, your olive oil and the firstborn animals from your cows, sheep and goats. Eat them there, at the Lord's special home. Then you will learn to respect the Lord your God always. But the Lord's special place may be a long way from your home. If he has blessed you with a lot of things, they may be too heavy for you to carry all that way. 25If that is true, you may sell your tithe. Then you may take the money carefully to the place that the Lord your God will choose. 26When you arrive there, you can use the money to buy any food that you choose: cows, sheep, wine, beer or anything else. Then you and your family should eat it there. You should enjoy your time together at the Lord's special home.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 14:24
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-29Verses 22-29 A second portion from the produce of their land was required. The whole appointment evidently was against the covetousness, distrust, and selfishness of the human heart. It promoted friendliness, liberality, and cheerfulness, and raised a fund for the relief of the poor. They were taught that their worldly portion was most comfortably enjoyed, when shared with their brethren who were in want. If we thus serve God, and do good with what we…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-27set aside a tenth: A tithe (or tenth) is the practice of giving one-tenth of income or produce. People gave a tenth long before the law of Moses (Genesis 14:20; 28:22). Other ancient cultures also practiced this. In the Bible, the tithe is treated as a tax or tribute. It is collected by the Lord from his people, who are like his subjects. The Lord, as sovereign, claims this portion as holy (see study notes on Deuteronomy 1:31 and 12:6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22-2722-27. Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed--The dedication of a tenth part of the year's produce in everything was then a religious duty. It was to be brought as an offering to the sanctuary; and, where distance prevented its being taken in kind, it was by this statute convertible into money.Read the comment
