Context of Deuteronomy 14:21
19Some insects have wings but they walk on the ground. Insects like that are unclean food for you. You must not eat them. 20But you may eat any clean insect that has wings. You must not eat anything that you find dead already. You may give it to a foreign person who lives in any of your towns. He may eat it. You may give it to him or sell it to him. But you yourselves are special people who belong to the Lord your God. You must not cook a young goat in the milk from its mother. 22You must keep safe a tenth part of all the crops that grow in your fields. You must be careful to do this every year. 23Then take your tithe to the place that the Lord your God will choose as his special home. It will be a tenth part of your grain, your new wine, your olive oil and the firstborn animals from your cows, sheep and goats. Eat them there, at the Lord's special home. Then you will learn to respect the Lord your God always.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk - Mr. Calmet thinks that this precept refers to the paschal lamb only, which was not to be offered to God till it was weaned from its mother; but see the note on Exodus 23:19.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3-21Verses 3-21 Compare Deuteronomy 14:5 The “pygarg” is a species of gazelle, and the “wild ox” and “chamois” are swift types of antelope. Deuteronomy 14:21 The prohibition is repeated from Leviticus 22:8. The directions as to the disposal of the carcass are unique to Deuteronomy, and their motive is clear. To have forbidden the people either themselves to eat that which had died, or to allow any others to do so, would have involved loss of property, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21God considered animals that died naturally to be ceremonially unclean. This was true even if they were ceremonially clean when alive. This was because they did not slaughter them according to ceremonial rules. They did not properly drain their blood and dispose of it (see 12:23–25). You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk: This pagan practice was improper because it showed insensitivity to the natural bond between mothers and their offspring…Read the comment
