Context of Daniel 5:25
23You thought that you were greater than the Lord of heaven. So you told your servants to bring the valuable cups that belong to God's temple. You yourself, your wives, your other women and your important friends drank wine from those cups. You praised your gods that were made from silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood and stone. Those are idols that cannot see or hear. They cannot understand anything. But you worshipped them instead of the true God. He is the God who gives life to you. He has power over everything that you do. 24Because of that, God sent the hand that wrote this message. These are the words: Mene, Mene, Tekel and Parsin. 26This is what the words mean: Mene means “counted”. It shows that God has counted the days of your kingdom. Now these days are finished. Your kingdom has come to an end. 27Tekel means “weighed”. It shows that God has weighed you. But the scales show that you are too light.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25And this is the writing - Had the words been written in the Chaldean character, every wise man there, every one that could read the alphabet of his own language, could have read and interpreted them. Let it be observed, - That the character which we now call Hebrew is the Chaldean character. That the true Hebrew character is that which we call the Samaritan. Daniel could easily read this, for it was the character used by the Jews previously to the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-31Verses 18-31 Daniel reads Belshazzar's doom. He had not taken warning by the judgments upon Nebuchadnezzar. And he had insulted God. Sinners are pleased with gods that neither see, nor hear, nor know; but they will be judged by One to whom all things are open. Daniel reads the sentence written on the wall. All this may well be applied to the doom of every sinner. At death, the sinner's days are numbered and finished; after death is the judgment, when he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25-28MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN: These Aramaic units of measure are used on a balance to weigh goods being bought and sold. Belshazzar knew the words, but Daniel explained their meaning in this context. The God of Israel measures kings and kingdoms using the balances of justice and righteousness (compare Daniel 4:27).Read the comment
