Context of Daniel 2:14
12This made the king very angry. So he said to his soldiers, ‘Kill all the wise men in Babylon.’ 13He sent a message to command them to kill all his wise men. Some men went to look for Daniel and his friends too. They wanted to punish them with death. But Daniel spoke carefully to Arioch. He was the captain of the king's soldiers who had gone to kill the wise men of Babylon. 15Daniel said to Arioch, ‘Why is the king's command so cruel?’ Then Arioch explained everything to Daniel. 16So Daniel went to see the king. He asked the king for more time. Then he would be able to tell the king what the dream meant.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Then Daniel answered - Margin, “returned.” The original literally is, “returned counsel and wisdom,” meaning, that he returned an answer which was replete with wisdom. It would seem probable that Arioch had communicated to Daniel the decree of the king, and had stated to him that he was involved in that decree, and must prepare to die. Counsel and wisdom - That is, “wise counsel.” He evinced great prudence and discretion in what he said. He made such a…Read the comment

Praying friends are valuable friends; and it well becomes the greatest and best men to desire the prayers of others. Let us show that we value our friends, and their prayers. They were particular in prayer. And whatever we pray for, we can expect nothing but as the gift of God's mercies. God gives us leave in prayer to tell our wants and burdens…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-49God gave a dream that showed the course of world history over the centuries, and Daniel explained its mysterious images. This dream and its interpretation highlight a key theme of the book—the certain final establishment of the kingdom of God as the ultimate goal of history (Daniel 2:44–45; 7:9–14, 26–27). This chapter also shows that paganism cannot understand the actions and plans of Israel’s God.Read the comment
