Context of Amos 1:11
9The Lord says, ‘The people in Tyre have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them. Before, they had been friends with the people in Israel. They had promised to those people, “We will be like brothers.” But the people from Tyre did not do what they had promised. They took my people away. They sold my people to the people in Edom and my people became slaves. 10So I will start a fire on the walls of Tyre city. And the fire will burn all the strong buildings. It will destroy them completely.’ The Lord says, ‘The people in Edom have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them. They took their swords and they chased after their cousins, the Israelites. They were not kind. Instead, they continued to be angry all the time. They did not stop attacking them. 12So I will start a fire. And the fire will destroy the big city of Teman. The fire will also burn the strong buildings of Bozrah city.’ 13The Lord says, ‘The people in Ammon have done more and more wrong things. So I will certainly punish them. People from Ammon fought against the people in Gilead. Ammon's people wanted to get more land for themselves. While they were killing people there, they also cut pregnant women open.

Commentaries on Amos 1:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11For three transgressions of Edom - That the Edomites (notwithstanding what Calmet observes above of the brotherly covenant) were always implacable enemies of the Jews, is well known; but most probably that which the prophet has in view was the part they took in distressing the Jews when Jerusalem was besieged, and finally taken, by the Chaldeans. See Obadiah 1:11-14; Ezekiel 25:12; Ezekiel 35:5; Psalm 137:7.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Edom - God had impressed on Israel its relation of brotherhood to Edom. Moses expressed it to Edom himself, and, after the suspicious refusal of Edom to allow Israel to march on the highway through his territory, he speaks as kindly of him, as before; “And when we passed by from our brethren, the children of Esau” Deuteronomy 2:8. It was the unkindness of worldly politics, and was forgiven. The religious love of the Egyptian and the Edomite was, on…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11Edom was another betrayer (see Amos 1:9; Genesis 36; see also Genesis 25:23–30; 27:39–40). The word brother refers to Edom’s close family relationship with Israel, since both peoples came from Isaac’s sons (see Genesis 25:25–30). The word brothers can also describe groups that are bound together by a treaty (see Amos 1:9). In this passage, Edom’s guilt lies in its ongoing hostility toward Israel and Judah. Edom repeatedly attacked Israel’s borders and…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Edom ... did pursue his brother--(Is 34:5). The chief aggravation to Edom's violence against Israel was that they both came from the same parents, Isaac and Rebekah (compare Ge 25:24-26; De 23:7, 8; Ob 10, 12; Mal 1:2). cast off all pity--literally, "destroy compassions," that is, did suppress all the natural feeling of pity for a brother in distress. his wrath for ever--As Esau kept up his grudge against Jacob, for having twice supplanted him…Read the comment
