Context of 2 Samuel 13:3
1David's son Absalom had a beautiful sister. Her name was Tamar. After some time, David's son Amnon began to love Tamar very much. 2Amnon was very upset because he loved his sister Tamar so much. He became ill because of this. Tamar had never had sex with any man, so Amnon knew that it would be difficult to get near her. Amnon had a friend called Jonadab. He was the son of David's brother, Shimeah. Jonadab was a clever man. 4He said to Amnon, ‘You are the king's son! So why do you seem so sad every morning? Tell me about your trouble.’ Amnon said to him, ‘I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.’ 5Jonadab told him, ‘Go and lie down on your bed. Pretend that you are ill. Your father will come to see you. Then you can say to him, “Please send my sister Tamar in here to give me something to eat. I will watch her as she prepares the food. Then she can use her own hand to feed me.” ’

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 13:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Jonadab was a very subtle man - And most diabolic advice did he give to his cousin. We talk of the simplicity and excellence of primitive times! "Say not thou what is the cause that the former days were better than these." Take them altogether, we may thank God that they are past, and pray him that they may never return.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Shimeah - Called Shamma (marginal reference), was Jesse‘s third son. Subtil - literally, wise. The word is generally used in a good sense, but here, and in Job 5:13, it means crafty.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3shrewd (literally wise): Jonadab's "wisdom" was similar to the serpent's cleverness (Genesis 3:1). In the context of a royal court, the Hebrew term for friend is closer to “counselor” or “adviser.”Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. Jonadab, the son of Shimeah--or Shammah (1Sa 16:9). By the counsel and contrivance of this scheming cousin a plan was devised for obtaining an unrestricted interview with the object of his attachment.Read the comment
