Context of 2 Kings 25:20
18Captain Nebuzaradan took hold of these people: Seraiah, the leader of the priests, Zephaniah, the next most important priest, and the three temple guards. 19He also took hold of these people who remained in Jerusalem: The palace officer with authority over the soldiers, five of the king's advisors, the army secretary who took men to join the army, and 60 other people of Judah who were in the city. Nebuzaradan took hold of all those people. He brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah, in the Hamath region. 21There, at Riblah, the king of Babylon commanded his soldiers to punish them all with death. That was how Judah's people went into exile, away from their own land. 22King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon chose Gedaliah, to have authority to rule the people who were still in Judah. Gedaliah was the son of Ahikam and the grandson of Shaphan.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-21Verses 8-21 The city and temple were burnt, and, it is probable, the ark in it. By this, God showed how little he cares for the outward pomp of his worship, when the life and power of religion are neglected. The walls of Jerusalem were thrown down, and the people carried captive to Babylon. The vessels of the temple were carried away. When the things signified were sinned away, what should the signs stand there for? It was righteous with God to deprive…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20Instead of deporting important citizens and officials like during the Babylonian invasion of 597 BC (2 Kings 24:14), Nebuchadnezzar executed these leaders. He even had religious leaders killed. Seraiah, the high priest, was killed. But his son Jehozadak was exiled (1 Chronicles 6:15). This allowed the priestly line to continue in captivity and later return to Jerusalem, starting in 538 BC (Ezra 1:1–2:20).Read the comment
