Context of 1 Samuel 28:12
10Then Saul promised the woman very strongly. He said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, nobody will punish you if you do this.’ 11The woman said, ‘Who is it that you want me to bring for you?’ Saul replied, ‘Bring Samuel to me.’ The woman screamed when she saw Samuel. She said to Saul, ‘You have deceived me! You are King Saul!’ 13The king said to her, ‘Do not be afraid. Tell me what you can see.’ She replied, ‘I can see a spirit that is coming up from the ground.’ 14Saul asked, ‘What does he look like?’ She said, ‘I see an old man who is wearing a long coat.’ Saul realized that this was Samuel. He bent down low on his knees with his face towards the ground.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12When the woman saw Samuel - That Samuel did appear on this occasion, is most evident from the text; nor can this be denied from any legitimate mode of interpretation: and it is as evident that he was neither raised by the power of the devil nor the incantations of the witch, for the appearances which took place at this time were such as she was wholly unacquainted with. Her familiar did not appear; and from the confused description she gives, it is fully…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12It is manifest both that the apparition of Samuel was real, and also that the woman was utterly unprepared for it. Why hast thou deceived me - She perhaps inferred that Samuel would have answered the call of none inferior to the king. Or it may be the presence of an inhabitant of the world of spirits brought a sudden illumination to her mind.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-19Verses 7-19 When we go from the plain path of duty, every thing draws us further aside, and increases our perplexity and temptation. Saul desires the woman to bring one from the dead, with whom he wished to speak; this was expressly forbidden, De 18:11. All real or pretended witchcraft or conjuration, is a malicious or an ignorant attempt to gain knowledge or help from some creature, when it cannot be had from the Lord in the path of duty.
