Context of 1 Samuel 15:30
28Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today. He has given it to a man who is better than you. 29The great God who rules over Israel always does what he says he will do. He does not change his mind. People may change their minds, but he does not!’ Saul said again, ‘I have done a bad thing. But please show Israel's leaders and people that you respect me. Please return with me so that I can worship the Lord your God.’ 31So Samuel went back with Saul. Saul worshipped the Lord. 32Then Samuel said, ‘Bring Agag, king of the Amalekites, to me.’ Agag came to Samuel. Agag was happy because he thought, ‘I am sure that now I will not have to die a painful death.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 30The pertinacity with which Saul clings to Samuel for support is a striking testimony to Samuel‘s integrity. With all his worldly-mindedness Saul could perceive and appreciate the purity of Samuel‘s character as a man of God. The Lord thy God - As above, 1 Samuel 15:15.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-31Verses 24-31 There were several signs of hypocrisy in Saul's repentance. 1. He besought Samuel only, and seemed most anxious to stand right in his opinion, and to gain his favour. 2. He excuses his fault, even when confessing it; that is never the way of a true penitent. 3. All his care was to save his credit, and preserve his interest in the people. Men are fickle and alter their minds, feeble and cannot effect their purposes; something happens they…Read the comment
