Context of 1 Samuel 11:12
10The men there said to Nahash, ‘Tomorrow we will come out of the town to you. Then you can do anything that you want to us.’ 11Early the next day, Saul put his soldiers into three groups. At dawn, they attacked the camp of the Ammonite soldiers. The Israelite soldiers continued to kill the Ammonites until midday. The Ammonite soldiers who were still alive ran away in different directions. Each man ran off by himself. The Israelite people said to Samuel, ‘Bring to us those men who said, “We do not want Saul to rule over us.” We must kill them!’ 13Saul said, ‘No, you must not kill anyone today. It is the day when the Lord has rescued Israel's people.’ 14Samuel said to the people, ‘Now we will all go to Gilgal. We must all agree that Saul will continue to be our king.’

The common soldier is scarcely ever inspired by his victory to acts of magnanimity; he has shed blood - he wishes to shed more!Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-15Verses 12-15 They now honoured Saul whom they had despised; and if an enemy be made a friend, that is more to our advantage than to have him slain. The once despised Saviour will at length be acknowledged by all as the Lord's own anointed king. As yet, upon his mercy-seat, he receives the submission of rebels, and even pleads their cause; but shortly, from his righteous tribunal, he will condemn all who persist in opposing him.Read the comment

The calm and sagacious counsel of Samuel directed the popular feelings into a right channel, by appointing a general assembly…Read the comment
