Context of 1 Chronicles 12:24
22Every day more men came to help David. So his army became very large and powerful, like God's own army. 23This is a list of the soldiers who joined David's army at Hebron. They came with their officers and they were ready to fight. They wanted to help David become king of Israel instead of Saul. The Lord had promised that this would happen. From Judah's tribe, there were 6,800 men who carried shields and spears. They knew how to fight well. 25From Simeon's tribe, there were 7,100 strong men who knew how to fight well. 26From Levi's tribe, there were 4,600 men.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-40Verses 23-40 When the throne of Christ is set up in a soul, there is, or ought to be, great joy in that soul; and provision is made, not as here, for a few days, but for the whole life, and for eternity. Happy are those who wisely perceive it to be their duty and interest, to submit to the Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of David; who renounce for his sake all that is not consistent; whose earnest endeavours to do good are directed by the wisdom that God…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-40The succession of a king was often a contentious issue, especially when the new king came from a different family. The gathering of all twelve tribes at Hebron, including some of Saul’s relatives (1 Chronicles 12:29), to confirm David’s rule showed that the tribes had resolved their conflicts after Saul’s death (12:23–37). The Chronicler emphasizes the unity among the tribes by stating that they all had the single purpose of making David the king over all…Read the comment
