Context of Psalms 106:44
42And their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. 43Often did he deliver them; but as for them they provoked [him] by their counsel, and they were brought low by their iniquity. But he regarded their distress, when he heard their cry; 45And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his loving-kindnesses; 46And he caused them to find compassion of all those that had carried them captives.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44Nevertheless, he regarded their affliction - literally, “And he looked upon the trouble that was upon them;” or, “and he saw in the distress to them.” The meaning is, that he did not turn away from it; he saw the need of interposition, and he came to them. When he heard their cry - literally, “In his hearing their cry.” Their cry for help came before him, and he did not refuse to look upon their affliction. The idea is, that he was attracted to their case…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-48Verses 34-48 The conduct of the Israelites in Canaan, and God's dealings with them, show that the way of sin is down-hill; omissions make way for commissions: when they neglected to destroy the heathen, they learned their works. One sin led to many more, and brought the judgments of God on them. Their sin was, in part, their own punishment. Sinners often see themselves ruined by those who led them into evil. Satan, who is a tempter, will be a tormentor…Read the comment
