15And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Every one when he revileth his God shall bear his sin. 16And he that blasphemeth the name of Jehovah shall certainly be put to death; all the assembly shall certainly stone him; as well the stranger as he that is home-born, when he blasphemeth the Name, shall be put to death. - Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17He that killeth any man - Blasphemy against God, i. e., speaking injuriously of his name, his attributes, his government, and his revelation, together with murder, is to be punished with death: he that blasphemes God is a curse in society, and he who takes away, wilfully and by malicious intent, the life of any man, should certainly be put to death. In this respect God has absolutely required that life shall go for life.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-23Verses 10-23 This offender was the son of an Egyptian father, and an Israelitish mother. The notice of his parents shows the common ill effect of mixed marriages. A standing law for the stoning of blasphemers was made upon this occasion. Great stress is laid upon this law. Strangers, as well as native Israelites, should be entitled to the benefit of the law, so as not to suffer…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 17Because human life was made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26, 27), murder was seen as an attack against God himself. It carried the same penalty as speaking blasphemy against God (Genesis 9:6). For a similar law and its details, see Exodus 21:12–14.Read the comment
