Context of Job 8:14

12Whilst it is yet in its greenness [and] not cut down, it withereth before any [other] grass. 13So are the paths of all that forget God; and the profane man's hope shall perish, Whose confidence shall be cut off, and his reliance is a spider's web. 15He shall lean upon his house, and it shall not stand; he shall lay hold on it, but it shall not endure. 16He is full of sap before the sun, and his sprout shooteth forth over his garden;

Commentaries on Job 8:14

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Whose hope shall be cut off - Such persons, subdued by the strong habits of sin, hope on fruitlessly, till the last thread of the web of life is cut off from the beam; and then they find no more strength in their hope than is in the threads of the spider's web. Mr. Good renders, Thus shall their support rot away. The foundation on which they trust is rotten, and by and by the whole superstructure of their confidence shall tumble into ruin.Read the comment

Rosenmuller and Noyes continue the quotation to the close of Job 8:19; Dr. Good closes it at Job 8:13. It seems to me that it is extended further than Job 8:13, and probably it is to be regarded as continued to the close of Job 8:18. The beginning of this verse has…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-19Verses 8-19 Bildad discourses well of hypocrites and evil-doers, and the fatal end of all their hopes and joys. He proves this truth of the destruction of the hopes and joys of hypocrites, by an appeal to former times. Bildad refers to the testimony of the ancients. Those teach best that utter words out of their heart, that speak from an experience of spiritual and divine things. A rush growing in fenny ground, looking very green, but withering in dry…Read the comment
