Context of Job 36:15
13But the godless in heart heap up anger; they cry not when he bindeth them: 14Their soul dieth in youth, and their life is among the unclean. But he delivereth the afflicted in his affliction, and openeth their ear in [their] oppression. 16Even so would he have allured thee out of the jaws of distress into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and the supply of thy table [would be] full of fatness. 17But thou art full of the judgments of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold [on thee].

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15And openeth their ears in oppression - He will let them know for what end they are afflicted, and why he permits them to be oppressed. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15He delivereth the poor in his affliction - Margin, “or afflicted.” This accords better with the usual meaning of the Hebrew word (עני ‛ânı̂y ) and with the connection. The inquiry was not particularly respecting the “poor,” but the “afflicted,” and the sentiment which Elihu is illustrating is, that when the afflicted call upon God he will deliver them. The object is to induce Job to make such an application to God that he might be rescued from his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-23Verses 15-23 Elihu shows that Job caused the continuance of his own trouble. He cautions him not to persist in frowardness. Even good men need to be kept to their duty by the fear of God's wrath; the wisest and best have enough in them to deserve his stroke. Let not Job continue his unjust quarrel with God and his providence. And let us never dare to think favourably of sin, never indulge it, nor allow ourselves in it. Elihu thinks Job needed this…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1513-15. Same sentiment as Job 36:11, 12, expanded. hypocrites--or, the ungodly [Maurer]; but "hypocrites" is perhaps a distinct class from the openly wicked (Job 36:12). heap up wrath--of God against themselves (Ro 2:5). Umbreit translates, "nourish their wrath against God," instead of "crying" unto Him. This suits well the parallelism and the Hebrew. But the English Version gives a good parallelism, "hypocrites" answering to "cry not" (Job 27:8, 10)…Read the comment
