Context of Isaiah 3:26
24And it shall come to pass, instead of perfume there shall be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a robe of display, a girding of sackcloth; brand instead of beauty. 25Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the fight; and her gates shall lament and mourn; and, stripped, she shall sit upon the ground.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26Sit upon the ground - Sitting on the ground was a posture that denoted mourning and deep distress. The prophet Jeremiah ( Lamentations 2:8;) has given it the first place among many indications of sorrow, in the following elegant description of the same state of distress of his country: - "The elders of the daughter of Sion sit on the ground, they are silent: They have cast up dust on their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth; The virgins of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26And her gates - Cities were surrounded with walls, and were entered through gates opening into the principal streets. Those gates became, of course, the places of chief confluence and of business; and the expression here means, that in all the places of confluence, or amidst the assembled people, there should be lamentation on account of the slain in battle, and the loss of their mighty men in war. It is not material to ask what sort of ornaments they wore; many of these things, if they had not been in fashion, would have been ridiculed then as now. Their…Read the comment
