Context of Genesis 10:21
19And the border of the Canaanite was from Sidon, as one goes to Gerar, up to Gazah; as one goes to Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, up to Lesha. 20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations. And to Shem — to him also were [sons] born; he is the father of all the sons of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder. 22The sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. 23And the sons of Aram: Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.

Commentaries on Genesis 10:21
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber - It is generally supposed that the Hebrews derived their name from Eber or Heber, son of Shem; but it appears much more likely that they had it from the circumstance of Abraham passing over (for so the word עבר abar signifies) the river Euphrates to come into the land of Canaan. See the history of Abraham, Genesis 14:13; (note).Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-32Verses 15-32 The posterity of Canaan were numerous, rich, and pleasantly seated; yet Canaan was under a Divine curse, and not a curse causeless. Those that are under the curse of God, may, perhaps, thrive and prosper in this world; for we cannot know love or hatred, the blessing or the curse, by what is before us, but by what is within us. The curse of God always works really, and always terribly. Perhaps it is a secret curse, a curse to the soul, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21Shem, the older brother of Japheth, was the ancestor of the Semitic peoples (people groups connected by language and culture in the ancient Near East) . The people listed here lived mainly to the east of Israel, in areas like modern Iraq, Iran, and Syria. The narrator focuses on places in Mesopotamia (the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers). This is important because Abram, the ancestor of Israel, came from this region (see 11:27–32).
