Context of Deuteronomy 2:36
34And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, men, and women, and little ones: we let none escape. 35Only the cattle we took as booty for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took. From Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the ravine even to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: Jehovah our God delivered all before us. 37Only thou didst not approach the land of the children of Ammon, the whole border of the river Jabbok, nor the cities of the mountain, nor to whatsoever Jehovah our God had forbidden us.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon - Aroer stood on the north bank of the river, and was assigned Joshua 13:9, Joshua 13:16 to the tribe of Reuben, of which it formed the most southerly city. The valley of the Arnon is here deep, and the descent to it abrupt. In Roman times it was spanned by a viaduct, the ruins of which still remain, and which was probably built on the lines of the original structure of Mesha 2 Kings 3:5. Aroer here must…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-37Verses 24-37 God tried his people, by forbidding them to meddle with the rich countries of Moab and Ammon. He gives them possession of the country of the Amorites. If we keep from what God forbids, we shall not lose by our obedience. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; and he gives it to whom he pleases; but when there is no express direction, none can plead his grant for such proceedings. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36Aroer stood on the north rim of the Arnon Gorge. It was about five kilometers (three miles) from Dibon. Aroer marked the southern border of the Amorite kingdom (3:12; 4:48; Joshua 12:2; 13:9, 16, 25). The identity of the town located in the gorge itself is not certain. Gilead lay north of the Jabbok River. This river formed the northern border of the Amorites under King Sihon. The territory of this people had been directly north from that of Moab. It extended as far as the Jabbok, having been taken by them from a number of small Canaanitish tribes, namely, the Zamzummins, a…Read the comment
