Context of 2 Samuel 8:12
10and Toi sent Joram his son to king David, to inquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and smitten him; for Hadadezer was continually at war with Toi. And he brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze. 11Them also king David dedicated to Jehovah, with the silver and the gold that he had dedicated of all the nations that he had subdued: of the Syrians, and of the Moabites, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of the Amalekites, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13And David made him a name when he returned, after he had smitten the Syrians in the valley of salt, eighteen thousand [men]. 14And he put garrisons in Edom: throughout Edom did he put garrisons; and all they of Edom became servants to David. And Jehovah preserved David whithersoever he went.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 8:12
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Syria - Rather, as in 1 Chronicles 18:11, Edom, which is manifestly the right reading, both because Edom, Moab, and Ammon are so frequently joined together, and because David‘s Syrian spoil is expressly mentioned at the end of the verse. (The Hebrew letters for Aram (Syria) and Edom are very similar.)Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-14Verses 9-14 All the precious things David was master of, were dedicated things; they were designed for building the temple. The idols of gold David destroyed, 2Sa 5:21, but the vessels of gold he dedicated. Thus, in the conquest of a soul by the grace of the Son of David, what stands in opposition to God must be destroyed, every lust must be mortified and crucified, but what may glorify him must be dedicated; thus the property of it is altered. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-12Captured war booty and gifts from foreign rulers were placed in God’s treasury, not in the king’s treasury. David dedicated both voluntary gifts (2 Samuel 8:11a) and goods taken from defeated enemies (2 Samuel 8:11b–12) to the Lord, instead of keeping them for himself.Read the comment
