Context of Isaiah 8:11
9Band together, peoples, and be broken; pay attention, all you distant lands; prepare for war, and be broken; prepare for war, and be broken. 10Devise a plan; it will fail. Make a prediction; it will not happen. For God is with us. For this is what the Lord said to me with great power, to keep me from going the way of this people: 12Do not call everything a conspiracy that these people say is a conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified. 13You are to regard only the Lord of Armies as holy. Only he should be feared; only he should be held in awe.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-16Verses 9-16 The prophet challenges the enemies of the Jews. Their efforts would be vain, and themselves broken to pieces. It concerns us, in time of trouble, to watch against all such fears as put us upon crooked courses for our own security. The believing fear of God preserves against the disquieting fear of man. If we thought rightly of the greatness and glory of God, we should see all the power of our enemies restrained. The Lord, who will be a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-15This text reveals Isaiah's main message. The issue was fear of the Lord versus fear of people (see Isaiah 7:9; 8:6). When someone fears people, the Lord becomes a trap and destruction is certain (compare Proverbs 29:25; see “Fearing People” Theme Note). For those who fear the Lord, he becomes a sanctuary and their salvation is assured.Read the comment
