Context of Ezekiel 40:14
12There was a barrier of 21 inches in front of the recesses on both sides, and the recesses on each side were 10½ feet square. 13Then he measured the gate from the roof of one recess to the roof of the opposite one; the distance was 43¾ feet. The openings of the recesses faced each other. Next, he measured the porch — 105 feet. 15The distance from the front of the gate at the entrance to the front of the gate’s portico on the inside was 87½ feet. 16The recesses and their jambs had beveled windows all around the inside of the gate. The porticoes also had windows all around on the inside. Each jamb was decorated with palm trees.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-16The exact architectural details of the temple are difficult to translate. Some of the building terms are hard to understand in every language. However, the overall impression of these gates is clear. The gates looked like fortresses (strong buildings used for defense). They were built to keep out people who did not have permission to enter. These gates protected the holy space of the temple. The eastern gateway is described first because it was the most…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-49The arrangements as to the land and the temple are, in many particulars, different from those subsisting before the captivity. There are things in it so improbable physically as to preclude a purely literal interpretation.
