Context of Ezekiel 40:10
8Next he measured the gate’s portico; 9it was 14 feet, and its jambs were 3½ feet. The gate’s portico was on the temple side. There were three recesses on each side of the east gate, each with the same measurements, and the jambs on either side also had the same measurements. 11Then he measured the width of the gate’s entrance; it was 17½ feet, while the width of the gate was 22¾ feet. 12There was a barrier of 21 inches in front of the recesses on both sides, and the recesses on each side were 10½ feet square.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-16The exact architectural details of the temple are difficult to translate. Some of the building terms are hard to understand in every language. However, the overall impression of these gates is clear. The gates looked like fortresses (strong buildings used for defense). They were built to keep out people who did not have permission to enter. These gates protected the holy space of the temple. The eastern gateway is described first because it was the most…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-49The arrangements as to the land and the temple are, in many particulars, different from those subsisting before the captivity. There are things in it so improbable physically as to preclude a purely literal interpretation. The general truth seems to hold good that, as Israel served the nations for his rejection of Messiah, so shall they serve him in the person of Messiah, when he shall acknowledge Messiah (Is 60:12; Zec 14:17-19; compare Psa 72:11).
