Context of Exodus 9:10
8Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of furnace soot, and Moses is to throw it toward heaven in the sight of Pharaoh. 9It will become fine dust over the entire land of Egypt. It will become festering boils on people and animals throughout the land of Egypt.” So they took furnace soot and stood before Pharaoh. Moses threw it toward heaven, and it became festering boils on people and animals. 11The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians. 12But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had told Moses.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-12Verses 8-12 When the Egyptians were not wrought upon by the death of their cattle, God sent a plague that seized their own bodies. If lesser judgments do not work, God will send greater. Sometimes God shows men their sin in their punishment. They had oppressed Israel in the furnaces, and now the ashes of the furnace are made a terror to them. The plague itself was very grievous. The magicians themselves were struck with these boils. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. Moses took ashes from the furnace--Hebrew, "brick-kiln." The magicians, being sufferers in their own persons, could do nothing, though they had been called; and as the brick-kiln was one of the principal instruments of oppression to the Israelites [De 4:20; 1Ki 8:51; Jr 11:4], it was now converted into a means of chastisement to the Egyptians, who were made to read their sin in their punishment.Read the comment
