Context of 2 Samuel 13:35
33So now, my lord the king, don’t take seriously the report that says all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.” 34Meanwhile, Absalom had fled. When the young man who was standing watch looked up, there were many people coming from the road west of him from the side of the mountain. Jonadab said to the king, “Look, the king’s sons have come! It’s exactly like your servant said.” 36Just as he finished speaking, the king’s sons entered and wept loudly. Then the king and all his servants also wept very bitterly. 37But Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35The watchman, as his duty was, had sent immediate notice to the king that he saw a crowd approaching (see 2 Kings 9:17-20). Jonadab, who was with the king, was prompt to give the explanation.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-39Verses 30-39 Jonadab was as guilty of Ammon's death, as of his sin; such false friends do they prove, who counsel us to do wickedly. Instead of loathing Absalom as a murderer, David, after a time, longed to go forth to him. This was David's infirmity: God saw something in his heart that made a difference, else we should have thought that he, as much as Eli, honoured his sons more than God.Read the comment
