Context of 2 Kings 12:6
4Then Joash said to the priests, “All the dedicated silver brought to the Lord’s temple, census silver, silver from vows, and all silver voluntarily given for the Lord’s temple — 5each priest is to take it from his assessor and repair whatever damage is found in the temple.” But by the twenty-third year of the reign of King Joash, the priests had not repaired the damage to the temple. 7So King Joash called the priest Jehoiada and the other priests and asked, “Why haven’t you repaired the temple’s damage? Since you haven’t, don’t take any silver from your assessors; instead, hand it over for the repair of the temple.” 8So the priests agreed that they would receive no silver from the people and would not be the ones to repair the temple’s damage.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 12:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6In the three and twentieth year - In what year Jehoash gave the orders for these repairs, we cannot tell; but the account here plainly intimates that they had been long given, and that nothing was done, merely through the inactivity and negligence of the priests; see 2 Chronicles 24:6. It seems that the people had brought money in abundance, and the pious Jehoiada was over the priests, and yet nothing was done! Though Jehoiada was a good man, he does not…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6No money had for some time been brought in (marginal reference “g”). Perhaps it was difficult for the priests and Levites to know exactly what proportion of the money paid to them was fairly applicable to the temple service and to their own support; and what, consequently, was the balance which they ought to apply to the repairs.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8Joash ordered the collection of funds from the cities of Judah (2 Chronicles 24:5) for temple repairs. The money came from special Levitical taxes, a census tax (2 Chronicles 24:9), and voluntary donations. After some time, the priests still had not repaired the temple. So Joash took control of the project and assigned others to manage the repairs (see also study note on 2 Chronicles 24:4–8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-182Ki 12:1-18. Jehoash Reigns Well while Jehoiada Lived. 2. Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord--so far as related to his outward actions and the policy of his government. But it is evident from the sequel of his history that the rectitude of his administration was owing more to the salutary influence of his preserver and tutor, Jehoiada, than to the honest and sincere dictates of his own mind.Read the comment
