Context of 2 Kings 10:33
31Yet Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins that Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. 32In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout their territory from the Jordan eastward: the whole land of Gilead — the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites — from Aroer which is by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan. 34The rest of the events of Jehu’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and all his might, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. 35Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz became king in his place.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33The loss of the entire trans-Jordanic territory seems to be intended, or at any rate its complete ruin and devastation (compare marginal reference “y”). This was the home of the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasseh Joshua 22:1-9. It was more accessible from Damascus than the region west of the river. Aroer - There were several places of this name. The one here mentioned is the most famous (compare Deuteronomy 2:36 note). Even Gilead…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-36Verses 29-36 It is justly questionable whether Jehu acted from a good principle, and whether he did not take some false steps in doing it; yet no services done for God shall go unrewarded. But true conversion is not only from gross sin, but from all sin; not only from false gods, but from false worships. True conversion is not only from wasteful sins, but from gainful sins; not only from sins which hurt our worldly interests, but from those that support…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-33Because Jehu was unfaithful, the Lord started reducing Israel's territory. This was one of the curses for breaking the covenant (Deuteronomy 28:25). The Aramean king Hazael moved south, taking over areas east of the Jordan River, north of Moab's border. The Arameans kept pressuring Israel during Jehu's rule and into his son Jehoahaz's reign (2 Kings 12:17–18; 13:3).Read the comment
