Context of 1 Samuel 13:3
1Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty-two years over Israel. 2He chose three thousand men from Israel for himself: two thousand were with Saul at Michmash and in Bethel’s hill country, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the troops away, each to his own tent. Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison in Gibeah, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!” 4And all Israel heard the news, “Saul has attacked the Philistine garrison, and Israel is now repulsive to the Philistines.” Then the troops were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal. 5The Philistines also gathered to fight against Israel: three thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 13:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Jonathan smote - He appears to have taken this garrison by surprise, for his men had no arms for a regular battle, or taking the place by storm. This is the first place in which this brave and excellent man appears; a man who bears one of the most amiable characters in the Bible. Let the Hebrews hear - Probably this means the people who dwelt beyond Jordan, who might very naturally be termed here העברים haibrim, from עבר abar, he passed over; those who…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Geba was situated between Jonathan’s forces at Gibeah and Saul’s forces at Michmash. A deep gorge (a steep, narrow valley) separated Geba and Michmash (see 1 Samuel 13:23; 14:5). The ram’s horn (shofar in Hebrew) was used to send signals, such as gathering an army (Judges 3:27). For other uses, see Leviticus 25:9; 2 Samuel 6:15; 15:10; 18:16; 20:1; Hosea 5:8; Joel 2:15. Non-Israelites often used the term Hebrews in a disrespectful way (see 1 Samuel 14:11…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-43-4. And Jonathan--that is, "God-given." smote the garrison of the Philistines ... in Geba--Geba and Gibeah were towns in Benjamin, very close to each other (Jos 18:24, 28). The word rendered "garrison" is different from that of 1Sa 13:23; 14:1, and signifies, literally, something erected; probably a pillar or flagstaff, indicative of Philistine ascendency. That the secret demolition of this standard, so obnoxious to a young and noble-hearted patriot, was…Read the comment
