Context of 1 Kings 1:33
31Bathsheba knelt low with her face to the ground, paying homage to the king, and said, “May my lord King David live forever!” 32King David then said, “Call in the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada for me.” So they came into the king’s presence. The king said to them, “Take my servants with you, have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and take him down to Gihon. 34There, the priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan are to anoint him as king over Israel. You are to blow the ram’s horn and say, ‘Long live King Solomon! ’ 35You are to come up after him, and he is to come in and sit on my throne. He is the one who is to become king in my place; he is the one I have commanded to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33Take with you the servants of your lord - By these we may understand the kings guards, the guards of the city, the Cherethites and Pelethites, who were under the command of Benaiah; and in short, all the disposable force that was at hand. Solomon - to ride upon mine own mule - No subject could use any thing that belonged to the prince, without forfeiting his life. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33Mules and horses seem to have been first employed by the Israelites in the reign of David, and the use of the former was at first confined to great personages 2 Samuel 13:29; 2 Samuel 18:9. The rabbis tell us that it was death to ride on the king‘s mule without his permission; and thus it would be the more evident to all that the proceedings with respect to Solomon had David‘s sanction. Gihon - Probably the ancient name of the valley called afterward the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-53Verses 32-53 The people expressed great joy and satisfaction in the elevation of Solomon. Every true Israelite rejoices in the exaltation of the Son of David. Combinations formed upon evil principles will soon be dissolved, when self-interest calls another way. How can those who do evil deeds expect to have good tidings? Adonijah had despised Solomon, but soon dreaded him. We see here, as in a glass, Jesus, the Son of David and the Son of God, exalted to…Read the comment

David's sons rode mules (2 Samuel 13:29; 18:9). Similarly, Zechariah predicts that Israel's king will come "riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey" (Zechariah 9:9), a prophecy fulfilled by Jesus (Matthew 21:4–7; John 12:14–15). When Solomon rode David's royal mule, it showed that David approved of…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3333. cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule--Directions were forthwith given for the immediate coronation of Solomon. A procession was to be formed by the "servants of their lord"--that is, the king's bodyguard. Mules were then used by all the princes (2Sa 13:29); but there was a state mule of which all subjects were forbidden, under pain of death, to make use, without special permission; so that its being granted to Solomon was a public…Read the comment
