Context of Psalms 90:5
3You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.” 4For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night. You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning— 6in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers. 7For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou carriest them away as with a flood - Life is compared to a stream, ever gliding away; but sometimes it is as a mighty torrent, when by reason of plague, famine, or war, thousands are swept away daily. In particular cases it is a rapid stream, when the young are suddenly carried off by consumptions, fevers, etc.; this is the flower that flourisheth in the morning, and in the evening is cut down and withered. The whole of life is like a sleep or as a…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Thou carriest them away as with a flood - The original here is a single verb with the suffix - זרמתם zerametâm The verb - זרם zâram - means, to flow, to pour; then, to pour upon, to overwhelm, to wash away. The idea is, that they were swept off as if a torrent bore them from the earth, carrying them away without regard to order, rank, age, or condition. So death makes no discrimination. Every day that passes, multitudes of every age, sex, condition…Read the comment
