Context of Jeremiah 15:7
5Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will turn aside to ask about your welfare? 6You have forsaken Me, declares the LORD. You have turned your back. So I will stretch out My hand against you and I will destroy you; I am weary of showing compassion. I will scatter them with a winnowing fork at the gates of the land. I will bereave and destroy My people who have not turned from their ways. 8I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. I will bring a destroyer at noon against the mothers of young men. I will suddenly bring upon them anguish and dismay. 9The mother of seven will grow faint; she will breathe her last breath. Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and humiliated. And the rest I will put to the sword in the presence of their enemies,” declares the LORD.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7I will fan them with a fan - There is no pure grain; all is chaff. In the gates of the land - The places of public justice: and there it shall be seen that the judgments that have fallen upon them have been highly merited. And from these places of fanning they shall go out into their captivity.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7I will fan them - Or, “I have winnowed them with a winnowing shovel.” The “gates of the land” mean the places by which men enter or leave it. As God winnows them they are driven out of the land through all its outlets in every direction. I will bereave - Rather, “I have bereaved, I have destroyed my people.” Omit “of children.” Since they return not - Rather, “from their ways they have not returned.”Read the comment
