Context of Jeremiah 10:9
7Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due. For among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You. 8But they are altogether senseless and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood! Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz— the work of a craftsman from the hands of a goldsmith. Their clothes are blue and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers. 10But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath, and the nations cannot endure His indignation. 11Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Brought from Tarshish - Some suppose this to be Tartessus in Spain, from which the Phoenicians brought much silver. Uphaz, Calmet thinks to be the river Pison; some think Ophir is intended. Blue and purple is their clothing - These were the most precious dyes; very rare, and of high price.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Or, “It is a piece of wood (Jeremiah 10:8 note); yea, beaten silver it is, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz: it is the work etc.” Tarshish Uphaz - See the marginal reference and Genesis 10:4. Possibly Uphaz was a place in the neighborhood of the River Hyphasis. Blue and purple - Both colors were purple, from dyes obtained from shellfish: but the former had a violet, the latter a red tinge.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9The people who made idols had to get metal from far away. They bought silver from Tarshish in southern Spain. They purchased gold from Uphaz (or Ophir) in Arabia. Skilled craftsmen and expert tailors worked hard to turn a worthless piece of wood or stone into an attractive artifact (see Jeremiah 10:4–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Everything connected with idols is the result of human effort. Silver spread--(See on Is 30:22; Is 40:19). Tarshish--Tartessus, in Spain, famed for precious metals. Uphaz--(Da 10:5). As the Septuagint in the Syrian Hexapla in the Margin, Theodotus, the Syrian and Chaldee versions have "Ophir," Gesenius thinks "Uphaz" a colloquial corruption (one letter only being changed) for "Ophir." Ophir, in Ge 10:29, is mentioned among Arabian countries. Perhaps…Read the comment
