Context of Genesis 25:25
23and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” 24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau. 26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born. 27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25Red, all over like a hairy garment - This simply means that he was covered all over with red hair or down; and that this must be intended here is sufficiently evident from another part of his history, where Rebekah, in order to make her favourite son Jacob pass for his brother Esau, was obliged to take the skins of kids, and put them upon his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. They called his name Esau - It is difficult to assign the proper meaning…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-26Verses 19-26 Isaac seems not to have been much tried, but to have spent his days in quietness. Jacob and Esau were prayed for; their parents, after being long childless, obtained them by prayer. The fulfilment of God's promise is always sure, yet it is often slow. The faith of believers is tried, their patience exercised, and mercies long waited for are more welcome when they come. Isaac and Rebekah kept in view the promise of all nations being blessed in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25Two wordplays anticipate Esau's future. Esau sounds like the Hebrew word se‘ar, meaning "hair." Esau's later homeland was Edom. Another name for it was Seir ("hairy") because it was wooded (as though covered with hair). red (Hebrew ’admoni): This Hebrew word sounds like Esau’s other name, Edom, which had red soil (25:27–34). hair like a fur coat: This suggests his unspiritual character (25:34; Hebrews 12:16; compare Leviticus 26:22; Deuteronomy 7:22; 1…Read the comment
