Context of Genesis 16:7
5Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.” 6“Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her. Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur. 8“Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied. 9So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7The angel of the Lord - That Jesus Christ, in a body suited to the dignity of his nature, frequently appeared to the patriarchs, has been already intimated. That the person mentioned here was greater than any created being is sufficiently evident from the following particulars: - 1. From his promising to perform what God alone could do, and foretelling what God alone could know; "I will multiply thy seed exceedingly," etc., Genesis 16:10; "Thou art with…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-16Verses 7-16 Hagar was out of her place, and out of the way of her duty, and going further astray, when the Angel found her. It is a great mercy to be stopped in a sinful way, either by conscience or by providence. Whence comest thou? Consider that thou art running from duty, and the privileges thou wast blest with in Abram's tent. It is good to live in a religious family, which those ought to consider who have this advantage. Whither wilt thou go? Thou…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7the angel of the LORD: The angel of the Lord was the Lord himself in some passages (16:13; 21:17; 22:11–12; 31:11–13; 48:16; Exodus 3:2; 32:34; Judges 6:11, 16, 22; 13:22–23; Zechariah 3:1–2). But in other passages he is distinct from the Lord (Genesis 24:7; 2 Samuel 24:16; Zechariah 1:12). This figure is often understood as a theophany (a visible appearance of God) or a Christophany (an appearance of the Messiah before he became human (see Genesis…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain--This well, pointed out by tradition, lay on the side of the caravan road, in the midst of Shur, a sandy desert on the west of Arabia-Petræa, to the extent of a hundred fifty miles, between Palestine and Egypt. By taking that direction, she seems to have intended to return to her relatives in that country. Nothing but pride, passion, and sullen obstinacy, could have driven any solitary person to brave…Read the comment
