Context of Ezekiel 47:1
Then the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. 2Next he brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and there I saw the water trickling out from the south side. 3As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through ankle-deep water.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Behold, waters issued out from under the threshold - Ezekiel, after having made the whole compass of the court of the people, is brought back by the north gate into the courts of the priests; and, having reached the gate of the temple, he saw waters which had their spring under the threshold of that gate, that looked towards the east; and which passing to the south of the altar of burnt-offerings on the right of the temple, ran from the west to the east…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1The vision of the waters; or, the blessings which flow from this source to animate and refresh all the inhabitants of the earth. Compare Isaiah 44:8 ; Joel 3:18. Ezekiel‘s description is adopted and modifled by Zechariah and in Rev. The Sea also had symbolic meaning. In the ancient world, the sea often represented chaos (disorder and danger). By placing the Sea in the temple, it showed that God had power over chaos within his ordered world. In Ezekiel’s vision, the Sea is no…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-23The happy fruit to the earth at large of God's dwelling with Israel in holy fellowship is that the blessing is no longer restricted to the one people and locality, but is to be diffused with comprehensive catholicity through the whole world. So the plant from the cedar of Lebanon is represented as gathering under its shelter "all fowl of every wing" (Eze 17:23). Even the desert places of the earth shall be made fruitful by the healing waters of the Gospel…Read the comment
