Commentaries on Ezekiel 38:1

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1The last conflict of the world with God, and the complete overthrow of the former. This section Ezekiel 20:7-10, where John adopts words and phrases of Ezekiel. There are four main divisions of this prophecy: (1) Ezekiel 38:1-13, describing Gog‘s march; (2) Ezekiel 38:14-23, describing his punishment; (3) Ezekiel 39:17-29, the issue of Gog‘s ruin in Israel‘s redemption and sanctification. Each division is broken up like a poem into stanzas.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1The army and malice of Gog. (Ezek 38:1-13) God's judgments. (Ezek 38:14-23) Verses 1-13 These events will be in the latter days. It is supposed these enemies will come together to invade the land of Judea, and God will defeat them. God not only sees who are now the enemies of his church, but he foresees who will be so, and lets them know by his word that he is against them; though they join together, the wicked shall not be unpunished.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-6Gog would lead a group of seven nations from all over the world. The numbers seven and four symbolize completeness, showing an unbeatable alliance from every direction. Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah were in the north, in Anatolia and beyond the Black Sea. Persia was to the east, Ethiopia to the south, and Libya to the west.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-23The objections to a literal interpretation of the prophecy are--(1) The ideal nature of the name Gog, which is the root of Magog, the only kindred name found in Scripture or history. (2) The nations congregated are selected from places most distant from Israel, and from one another, and therefore most unlikely to act in concert (Persians and Libyans, &c.). (3) The whole spoil of Israel could not have given a handful to a tithe of their number, or…Read the comment
