Context of Numbers 21:26
24And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon. 27Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come ye to Heshbon; Let the city of Sihon be built and established: 28For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It hath devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

Commentaries on Numbers 21:26
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, etc. - It appears therefore that the territory now taken from Sihon by the Israelites was taken from a former king of Moab, in commemoration of which an epikedion or war song was made, several verses of which, in their ancient poetic form, are here quoted by Moses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-35Verses 21-35 Sihon went with his forces against Israel, out of his own borders, without provocation, and so ran upon his own ruin. The enemies of God's church often perish by the counsels they think most wisely taken. Og, king of Bashan, instead of being warned by the fate of his neighbours, to make peace with Israel, makes war with them, which proves in like manner his destruction. Wicked men do their utmost to secure themselves and their possessions…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26Sihon king of the Amorites captured the area north of the Arnon from the Moabites, who controlled it earlier. Israel then occupied this region for several hundred years. King Mesha of Moab reclaimed it around 830 BC (see 2 Kings 3:4–27). This came through a campaign detailed on the Mesha Inscription (also known as the Moabite Stone). Heshbon is usually considered to be Tell Hesban. No evidence yet has shown that people lived there in the Late Bronze Age…Read the comment
