Context of Numbers 15:34
32And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day. 33And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him. 35And Jehovah said unto Moses, The man shall surely be put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. 36And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him to death with stones; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34Although it was clear that the man was guilty, the community might have been unsure about his punishment. The death sentence was appropriate because ignoring the Sabbath showed a rejection of God's gracious covenant with Israel (Exodus 31:12–17). It was similar to blasphemy (Numbers 15:30; Leviticus 24:10–16; compare 1 Timothy 1:20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 32-3432-34. a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day--This incident is evidently narrated as an instance of presumptuous sin. The mere gathering of sticks was not a sinful act and might be necessary for fuel to warm him or to make ready his food. But its being done on the Sabbath altered the entire character of the action.
