Commentaries on Job 1:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1In the land of Uz - This country was situated in Idumea, or the land of Edom, in Arabia Petraea, of which it comprised a very large district. See the preface. Whose name was Job - The original is איוב Aiyob ; and this orthography is followed by the Chaldee, Syriac, and Arabic. From the Vulgate we borrow Job, not very dissimilar from the Iob of the Septuagint. The name signifies sorrowful, or he that weeps. He is supposed to have been called Jobab. See…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1There was a man - This has all the appearance of being a true history. Many have regarded the whole book as a fiction, and have supposed that no such person as Job ever lived. But the book opens with the appearance of reality; and the express declaration that there was such a man, the mention of his name and of the place where he lived, show that the writer meant to affirm that there was in fact such a man. On this question see the Introduction, Section…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1This book is so called from Job, whose prosperity, afflictions, and restoration, are here recorded. He lived soon after Abraham, or perhaps before that patriarch. Most likely it was written by Job himself, and it is the most ancient book in existence. The instructions to be learned from the patience of Job, and from his trials, are as useful now, and as much needed as ever. We live under the same Providence, we have the same chastening Father, and there…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1The phrase "There once was a man" can begin a parable (symbolic story with asocial meanings) or a historical account (2 Samuel 12:1; 1 Samuel 25:2). Ezekiel 14:14, 20 and James 5:11 also mention Job. Uz is east of the Jordan River, either in Edom to the south or in Aram to the north (Genesis 36:28; 1 Chronicles 1:42; Jeremiah 25:19–20; Lamentations 4:21; Genesis 10:23; 22:21; 1 Chronicles 1:17, 42). Job was not from Israel. He lived before the nation of…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1Job a Real Person.--It has been supposed by some that the book of Job is an allegory, not a real narrative, on account of the artificial character of many of its statements. Thus the sacred numbers, three and seven, often occur. He had seven thousand sheep, seven sons, both before and after his trials; his three friends sit down with him seven days and seven nights; both before and after his trials he had three daughters. So also the number and form of…Read the comment
