Context of Genesis 22:13
11And the angel of Jehovah called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. 14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of Jehovah it shall be provided. 15And the angel of Jehovah called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven,

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-14Verses 11-14 It was not God's intention that Isaac should actually be sacrificed, yet nobler blood than that of animals, in due time, was to be shed for sin, even the blood of the only begotten Son of God. But in the mean while God would not in any case have human sacrifices used, another sacrifice is provided. Reference must be had to the promised Messiah, the blessed Seed. Christ was sacrificed in our stead, as this ram instead of Isaac, and his death…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13God provided a ram caught by its horns in a bush for the sacrifice. God graciously allowed Abraham to substitute an animal sacrifice instead of Isaac. Later, all of Israel would offer animals to the Lord, understanding that God's grace allowed this substitution (Exodus 29:10; Leviticus 4:15; 16:20–22). In the New Testament, God substituted his only son for all humanity. This perfect sacrifice was made once and for all people (Isaiah 53:6, 10; John 1:29…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1913-19.
