Context of Amos 4:4
2The Lord Jehovah hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that they shall take you away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks. 3And ye shall go out at the breaches, every one straight before her; and ye shall cast yourselves into Harmon, saith Jehovah. Come to Beth-el, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days; 5and offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, and proclaim freewill-offerings and publish them: for this pleaseth you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord Jehovah. 6And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places; yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah.

Commentaries on Amos 4:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Come to Beth-el and transgress - Spoken ironically. Go on to worship your calves at Beth-el; and multiply your transgressions at Gilgal; the very place where I rolled away the reproach of your fathers, by admitting them there into my covenant by circumcision. A place that should have ever been sacred to me; but you have now desecrated it by enormous idolatries. Let your morning and evening sacrifices be offered still to your senseless gods; and continue…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Come to Beth-el and transgress - Having foretold their captivity, the prophet tries irony. But his irony is in bidding them go on to do, what they were doing earnestly, what they were set upon doing, and would not be withdrawn from. As Micaiah in irony, until adjured in the name of God, joined Ahab‘s court-priests, bidding, him “go to Ramoth-Gilead” 1 Kings 22:15, where he was to perish; or Elijah said to the priests of Baal, “Cry aloud, for he is a god”…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4Amos sharply criticizes the Israelites’ acts of worship because they did not match how they lived. Bethel, where Jacob saw his vision of a ladder with angels going up and down (Genesis 28:11–22), was the southern center of the religion started by Jeroboam I (see Amos 3:14; 1 Kings 12:28–29). Gilgal, Israel's campsite after crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 4:19–5:9), had become a popular shrine by the time of Amos and Hosea (Hosea 4:15; 9:15; 12:11)…Read the comment
