Context of 2 Kings 14:2
1In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel began Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah to reign. He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. 3And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, yet not like David his father: he did according to all that Joash his father had done. 4Howbeit the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:2
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Joash of Judah reigned forty years 2 Kings 12:1, and Joash of Israel ascended the throne in his namesake‘s thirty-seventh year 2 Kings 13:10; hence, we should have expected to hear that Amaziah succeeded his father in the fourth rather than in the second year of Joash (of Israel). The usual explanation of the discrepancy is to suppose a double accession of the Israelite Joash - as co-partner with his father in the thirty-seventh year of his namesake, as…Read the comment

He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
