Context of Leviticus 2:11
9The priest shall take from the grain offering its memorial portion and offer it up in smoke on the altar. It is an offering by fire, a sweet and soothing aroma to the Lord. 10What is left of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the offerings to the Lord by fire. ‘No grain offering that you bring to the Lord shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer up in smoke any leaven [which symbolizes the spread of sin] or any honey [which, like leaven, is subject to fermentation] in any offering by fire to the Lord. 12As an offering of first fruits you may offer them [leaven and honey] to the Lord, but they shall not go up [in smoke] on the altar as a sweet and soothing aroma. 13You shall season every grain offering with salt so that the salt (preservation) of the covenant of your God will not be missing from your grain offering. You shall offer salt with all your offerings.

Commentaries on Leviticus 2:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11No meat-offering - shall be made with leaven - See the reason of this prohibition in the note on Exodus 12:8; (note). Nor any honey - Because it was apt to produce acidity, as some think, when wrought up with flour paste; or rather because it was apt to gripe and prove purgative. On this latter account the College of Physicians have totally left it out of all medicinal preparations. This effect which it has in most constitutions was a sufficient reason…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11As for the oblation of the firstfruits - Rather, As an oblation of firstfruits. The words refer to the leaven and honey mentioned in Leviticus 2:11 which might be offered among the firstfruits and tithes (Deuteronomy 26:2, Deuteronomy 26:12; compare 2 Chronicles 31:5). Honey, being used to produce fermentation, and leaven (or, a small piece of fermented dough) were excluded because fermentation was an apt symbol of the working of corruption in the human…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11leaven: The bread eaten in biblical times was like modern sourdough. What is often called leaven was wild yeast spores mixed into moist dough or flour. The leaven would grow, fermenting and becoming sour and raising the dough. They would save a portion of this sour dough to knead into future batches (Matthew 13:33). Unleavened bread was necessary for Passover (Exodus 12:8). This was to remember Israel's slavery in Egypt (Deuteronomy 16:3) and their quick…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the Lord--Nothing sweet or sour was to be offered. In the warm climates of the East leavened bread soon spoils, and hence it was regarded as the emblem of hypocrisy or corruption. Some, however, think that the prohibition was that leaven and honey were used in the idolatrous rites of the heathen.Read the comment
