Context of Joshua 16:2
1Then the lot (allotment) for the sons of Joseph went from the Jordan Valley at Jericho to the waters of Jericho on the east into the wilderness, going up from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. Then it went from Bethel to Luz, and continued to Ataroth, the border of the Archites. 3It went down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the outskirts of lower Beth-horon, then to Gezer, and it ended at the sea. 4The sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2From Bethel to Luz - From Genesis 28:19; (note) it appears that the place which Jacob called Beth-el was formerly called Luz; see the note there: but here they seem to be two distinct places. It is very likely that the place where Jacob had the vision was not in Luz, but in some place within a small distance of that city or village, (see the note on Genesis 28:12;), and that sometimes the whole place was called Beth-el, at other times Luz, and sometimes…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Of Archi - (Read “of the Archite,” also a designation of David‘s friend Hushai (2 Samuel 15:32; 2 Samuel 16:16, etc.). The word is derived from Erech Genesis 10:10. But whether there was in the neighborhood of Bethel a place bearing this Babylonian name, or whether a colony from the East had settled in this spot and brought the name with them, is unknown. Ataroth - Called Joshua 16:5; Joshua 18:13 Ataroth-adar (= “crowns of fame or greatness”) perhaps to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-10Joseph had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim (Genesis 41:50–52). Half of those descended from Manasseh received their inheritance east of the Jordan River. The tribe of Ephraim and the rest of Manasseh's tribe now received their land. This made the total number of land portions twelve, fulfilling Jacob's blessing to Joseph (Genesis 49:22–26). Like Judah in the south, Joseph’s tribes led from their central position in the north.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-41. the lot of the children of Joseph fell--Hebrew, "went forth," referring either to the lot as drawn out of the urn, or to the tract of land thereby assigned. The first four verses describe the territory allotted to the family of Joseph in the rich domains of central Palestine. It was drawn in one lot, that the brethren might be contiguously situated; but it was afterwards divided. The southern boundary only is described here; that on the north being…Read the comment
