Context of Jeremiah 30:5
3For behold (hear this), the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘when I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord, ‘and I will return them to the land that I gave to their forefathers and they will take possession of it.’ ” 4Now these are the words the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah: “Thus says the Lord, ‘We have heard a terrified voice Of panic and dread, and there is no peace. 6Ask now, and see Whether a man can give birth [to a child]. Why then do I see every man With his hands on his loins, as a woman in labor? Why have all faces turned pale? 7Alas! for that day is great, There is none like it; It is the time of Jacob’s [unequaled] trouble, But he will be saved from it.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 30:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5We have heard a voice of trembling - This may refer to the state and feelings of the people during the war which Cyrus carried on against the Babylonians. Trembling and terror would no doubt affect them, and put an end to peace and all prosperity; as they could not tell what would be the issue of the struggle, and whether their state would be better or worse should their present masters fall in the conflict. This is well described in the next verse, where…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Better, as in the margin. The prophet places his hearers in the center of Babylon, and describes it as convulsed with terror as the armies of Cyrus draw near. The voice of trembling is the war-cry of the advancing host: while fear and no peace implies that even among the exiles there is only alarm at the prospect of the city, where they had so long dwelt, being destroyed.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-24This series of messages is mostly positive, with only two verses having a judgmental tone (Jeremiah 30:23–24). They describe the positive outcomes of Jerusalem's destruction and the Exile.Read the comment
