Context of Exodus 14:7
5When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this that we have done? We have let Israel go from serving us!” 6So Pharaoh harnessed horses to his war-chariots [for battle] and took his army with him; and he took six hundred chosen war-chariots, and all the other war-chariots of Egypt with fighting charioteers over all of them. 8The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, as they were leaving confidently and defiantly. 9The Egyptians chased them with all the horses and war-chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them as they camped by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

Commentaries on Exodus 14:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Six hundred chosen chariots, etc. - According to the most authentic accounts we have of war-chariots, they were frequently drawn by two or by four horses, and carried three persons: one was charioteer, whose business it was to guide the horses, but he seldom fought; the second chiefly defended the charioteer; and the third alone was properly the combatant. It appears that in this case Pharaoh had collected all the cavalry of Egypt; (see Exodus 14:17;)…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Six hundred chosen chariots - The Egyptian army comprised large numbers of chariots, each drawn by two horses, with two men, one bearing the shield and driving, the other fully armed. The horses were thoroughbred, renowned for strength and spirit. Chariots are first represented on the monuments of the 18th dynasty. By “all the chariots of Egypt” we are to understand all that were stationed in Lower Egypt, most of them probably at Rameses and other…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-7chariot: At this time in history, the Egyptian light chariot was the top weapon. Pulled by three horses, it was fast and easy to maneuver. Sometimes one person operated it, but some ancient pictures show a driver with a warrior. The mention of officers may suggest these two-man teams. The world's strongest military power was gathering against the Hebrews.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-76-7. he made ready his chariot--His preparations for an immediate and hot pursuit are here described: A difference is made between "the chosen chariots" and "the chariots of Egypt." The first evidently composed the king's guard, amounting to six hundred, and they are called "chosen," literally, "third men"; three men being allotted to each chariot, the charioteer and two warriors. As to "the chariots of Egypt," the common cars contained only two persons…Read the comment
