Context of Esther 5:8
6As they drank their wine at the banquet, the king said to Esther, “What is your petition? It shall be granted to you. And what is your request? Even to half of the kingdom it shall be done.” 7Then Esther replied, “My petition and my request is this: if I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and to do as I request, may the king and Haman come to the banquet that I will prepare for them; and tomorrow I will do as the king says [and express my request].” 9Haman went away that day joyful and in good spirits. But when he saw Mordecai at the king’s gate refusing to stand up or show fear before him, he was filled with rage toward Mordecai. 10Nevertheless, Haman controlled himself and went home. There he sent for his friends and his wife Zeresh.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8I will do to-morrow - She saw she was gaining on the king's affections; but she was not yet sufficiently confident; and therefore wished another interview, that she might ingratiate herself more fully in the king's favor, and thus secure the success of her design. But Providence disposed of things thus, to give time for the important event mentioned in the succeeding chapter.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8grant my petition...come tomorrow: It was customary not to seem eager when asking for a favor or negotiating an agreement. The delay gave Xerxes time to learn about Mordecai's loyalty, which helped stop Haman's plot (see Esther 6:1–14).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare--The king ate alone, and his guests in an adjoining hall; but they were admitted to sit with him at wine. Haman being the only invited guest with the king and queen, it was natural that he should have been elated with the honor.Read the comment
