Context of Deuteronomy 25:14
12then you shall cut off her hand; you shall not show pity [for her]. 13“You shall not have in your bag inaccurate weights, a heavy and a light [so you can cheat others]. You shall not have in your house inaccurate measures, a large and a small. 15You shall have a perfect (full) and just weight, and a perfect and just measure, so that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 16For everyone who does such things, everyone who acts unjustly [without personal integrity] is utterly repulsive to the Lord your God.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Divers measures - Literally, an ephah and an ephah; one large, to buy thy neighbor's wares, another small, to sell thy own by. So there were knaves in all ages, and among all nations. See the notes on Exodus 16:16, and Leviticus 19:35; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 Honesty in trade, as a duty to our neighbor, is emphatically enforced once more (compare Leviticus 19:35-36). It is noteworthy that John the Baptist puts the like duties in the forefront of his preaching (compare Luke 3:12 ff); and that “the prophets” (compare Ezekiel 45:10-12; Amos 8:5; Micah 6:10-11) and “the Psalms” Proverbs 16:11; Proverbs 20:10, Proverbs 20:23, not less than “the Law,” especially insist on them. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-16Verses 13-16 Dishonest gain always brings a curse on men's property, families, and souls. Happy those who judge themselves, repent of and forsake their sins, and put away evil things, that they may not be condemned of the Lord.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14You shall not have two differing weights … one large and one small (Hebrew you must not have stone and stone, large and small, … ephah and ephah, large and small): Merchants should not use two sets of weights and measures to cheat customers. They should not use a heavier weight when buying goods to pay less or a lighter one when selling to earn more.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1613-16. Thou shalt not have ... divers weights--Weights were anciently made of stone and are frequently used still by Eastern shopkeepers and traders, who take them out of the bag and put them in the balance. The man who is not cheated by the trader and his bag of divers weights must be blessed with more acuteness than most of his fellows [Roberts]. (Compare Pr 16:11; 20:10).Read the comment
