Context of 2 Samuel 8:11
9When Toi king of Hamath heard about David’s defeat of all the forces of Hadadezer, 10Toi sent Joram his son to King David to greet and congratulate him for his battle and defeat of Hadadezer; for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi. Joram brought with him articles of silver, gold, and bronze [as gifts]. King David also dedicated these [gifts] to the Lord, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he subdued: 12from Aram (Syria), Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13So David made a name for himself when he returned from killing 18,000 Arameans (Syrians) in the Valley of Salt.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-14Verses 9-14 All the precious things David was master of, were dedicated things; they were designed for building the temple. The idols of gold David destroyed, 2Sa 5:21, but the vessels of gold he dedicated. Thus, in the conquest of a soul by the grace of the Son of David, what stands in opposition to God must be destroyed, every lust must be mortified and crucified, but what may glorify him must be dedicated; thus the property of it is altered. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-12Captured war booty and gifts from foreign rulers were placed in God’s treasury, not in the king’s treasury. David dedicated both voluntary gifts (2 Samuel 8:11a) and goods taken from defeated enemies (2 Samuel 8:11b–12) to the Lord, instead of keeping them for himself.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord--Eastern princes have always been accustomed to hoard up vast quantities of gold. This is the first instance of a practice uniformly followed by David of reserving, after defraying expenses and bestowing suitable rewards upon his soldiers, the remainder of the spoil taken in war, to accumulate for the grand project of his life--the erection of a national temple at Jerusalem.Read the comment
